- Map every basement or below-grade toilet, sink, shower, floor drain, laundry and pump connection.
- Record past backup entry points, water levels, rainfall, public notices, and private-line findings.
- Identify whether a device already exists, where it is accessible, and when it was last inspected or maintained.
- Ask what permits, BWSC requirements and downstream access apply to the proposed design.

BWSC recommends backwater protection as one way to reduce reverse-flow risk at fixtures below street grade. That does not make one valve suitable for every layout. Ask a licensed plumber to evaluate the drainage arrangement, access, device type, inspection needs, and consequences if the valve closes during use.
