Water Line Service in Beacon Hill

The water service infrastructure for Beacon Hill's historic buildings encompasses the city water main in the street, the service line connection tapping the main (typically at a corporation stop valve controlled by BWSC), the underground service pipe running from the main to the building foundation, the curb stop shutoff valve in the sidewalk, and the building's internal water distribution system from the foundation entry point. Any failure in this chain — from a corroded service pipe to a failed curb stop to a failed corporation stop — requires BWSC permit and coordination with Commission staff before repair work can begin. Lead Service Pipe Replacement

Lead service pipes — the standard water service connection material installed in Boston residential buildings from approximately 1880 through the late 1940s — remain in place in a significant percentage of Beacon Hill's pre-war residential buildings. Lead service pipes present a genuine public health concern because lead can leach from the pipe wall into the water supply, particularly during periods of stagnant flow and in the presence of aggressive (low pH) water chemistry. While the MWRA treats its water with orthophosphate to reduce lead leaching, this treatment is only partially effective and does not fully mitigate exposure risk from severely deteriorated lead service pipes. We are fully trained and BWSC-registered to perform lead service pipe replacement: the work involves excavating to expose the lead service at the curb stop, cutting and capping the lead section, installing new 1-inch Type K copper service pipe from the curb stop connection to the building entry, and restoring the excavation with compacted fill and pavement restoration. BWSC inspects the new service connection before backfill. The entire project is managed under BWSC permit from application through final inspection sign-off.

Water Service Line Repairs

Beyond lead pipe replacement, water service lines can develop leaks at corroded fittings, at the point where the service enters the building foundation (a common failure location as the building's seasonal movement creates stress on a rigid pipe at a fixed penetration), and at the curb stop valve if the valve has not been operated in decades and has corroded in place. We repair water service line leaks and failed curb stop valves under BWSC permit, using approved copper and brass fittings and restoring all pavement surfaces disturbed during excavation to pre-work condition.

Internal Building Water Distribution

Beyond the service line, Beacon Hill's older buildings often have internal distribution systems that require upgrading: undersized 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch galvanized supply mains that restrict flow to multiple units, failed pressure-reducing valves at the water service entry that result in either excessive pressure or inadequate pressure throughout the building, and missing or failed expansion tanks that cause pressure relief valve discharges on water heaters. We assess the complete building water distribution system and provide a comprehensive remediation plan when systemic issues are identified.
