- Diverter clue: water continues from the tub outlet while flow is directed to the shower.
- Drain clue: the receptor level rises or a nearby fixture gurgles.
- Enclosure clue: water escapes a joint, door, curtain, threshold, grout line or wall surface during spray.

A drip from the showerhead while off, tub-spout leakage during shower use, unstable temperature, slow drain, wet wall, or water outside the enclosure should not be compressed into shower leak. Record the operating state that produces each clue.
